Some Nostalgic Ramblings

I received this December 1992 “Riding On” magazine when I joined the Ulysses Club.

It was all in black and white apart from a bit of red on the cover, which featured a photo supplied by Peter (The Bear) Thoeming and which depicted a “then new wave” Triumph Trophy with a bread stick on the rack while on a trip in Europe.

The Riding On editor was the then club president Tom Dudley.  It featured news reports and ride calendars from about a dozen branches including Melbourne and the late Bob Tate was our branch president.  It also featured a travel story and details of the planned Shepparton AGM written by Noreen Miles. Happily, she came to the Melbourne Branch 30th Anniversary in 2014 at Korumburra.

The ride start points were Dandenong, Bunker Hill, Lilydale and Melton (only Lilydale remains unchanged) and the social nights were held at the Post…

Thanks John. Apprecaite the history. Not sure about the CX650 though, but clearly your love of Honda's goes way back. Good to know you got the photos back then too.

Additional Ride Leaders Welcome

Hello,

in case you haven’t heard, Andrew has stepped down and I’m the ride coordinator for this year.

Melbourne Branch remains unique in maintaining a very active Sunday ride calendar and has been doing so for 40 years now.

Committee members have been very active in organising this and leading rides, but I will add that it is not just up to committee members to actually lead rides.  The more members we have do this, the more variety we get on rides and the easier it is to fill the ride calendar.  Even if 6 – 10 regular ride participants led one or two rides a year, it really would help share the load.

I’m not pretending it is simple and I wouldn’t recommend volunteering to lead rides if you’re not experienced in taking part in branch rides.    I understand that some members just wouldn’t be comfortable doing it,…

Hi John - well said!! But when you say "a couple of 80 km “legs” to allow a rest/cuppa stop, a lunch stop and then a return ride", do you mean a 160km ride to the lunch stop? If you do, I think that is spot on!! Just sayin'.....😀

And Hello Autumn!

A reminder the Melbourne Branch Social gathering is on Wednesday the 18th (yes Next Week) so please get your RSVP in and help Brian with booking numbers.  See you there.

The Labour Day long weekend ride to Bombala was a great success again.  Check out the ride report under “Groups”.  Andrew - thanks for organising.

The ride this Sunday is from Officer to Mirboo North   - Alf certainly knows his way around Gippsland.   Loves it so much, he moved down there but still willing to share the love of great riding country.😎   Thanks Alf

  • The Annual Alpine Run is just over a fortnight away.  Starts 0800 Saturday at the outbound on the freeway (not the usual Officer start point).  If you’ve not already made your booking and let me know your intentions, please do so ASAP.

  • Several people have already arranged to ride into Gippsland on Friday and meet the…

End of Summer News

Yes, summer is ending and the branch AGM was held last Saturday.  Brian Lacey, Pat Ryan and Brian Quintall remain as president, secretary and treasurer respectively.  Jeff has retired from the committee, and I am taking over the ride coordinator role from Andrew.

We still have a vacancy for a ride leader this coming Sunday 1st March so if you feel you can help please contact me ASAP.   If I hear from no-one, we will probably post a mystery ride from Epping and the ride leader can be selected from those who turn up.

We do have lots coming up including an overnight ride via Wilsons Promontory to Yarram this week, a ride to Bombala on the Labor Day weekend and the annual alpine run at the end of March.

Plans are also being made for rides to varied destinations including Portarlington (perhaps with a ferry crossing return) the Mornington Peninsula…
