Impromptu Mid Week Ride 13th May 2025

Thanks to a last minute suggestion by Paul last night, three of us enjoyed an impromptu ride today.  Graham, Paul and I met at Lilydale in perfect autumn riding weather and rode off through orchards and up the Yarra River valley via back roads to Warburton and then up the “Reefton Spur” to Cambarville.  Traffic was minimal and the road up was in great condition apart from some damp corners which probably didn’t get to see any sun all day and quite a few small trees partially blocking lanes of the road.   Caution was exercised and it was still a very enjoyable ride up.

From then on, the road surface deteriorated badly as far as the Lake Mountain turn off.  A wallaby had the good sense to run away from us rather than into us and I also had a lyrebird cross my path as I started the descent – Lovely to see.  The road surface down from Lake Mountain was good again.

We had a rest / cuppa break at Fraga’s Cafe

where the coffee and snacks were good and the service was very friendly.  We then rode on to Buxton and discovered we were a few weeks too late to see the best of the poplar trees in their autumnal colour.

The ride back to Healesville was delightful.  The driver of the only car in our direction understood what slow vehicle turnouts were for and let us pass at first opportunity – great roadcraft and his efforts were acknowledged with a wave of appreciation.  We then took back roads

across to Yarra Glen and discovered that the government has found lots more 80 KPH signs!!

We headed north briefly, left the highway and explored past some vineyards

as far as Steels Creek before turning back and stopping at Yarra Glen for lunch and a good long chat. Then it was home via Gruyere.

Another great day of riding.  Paul – thanks for the inspiration (a hedge was not trimmed today) and Graham thanks for coming along at such short notice.

Cheers John Cook
